If you are buying your first vibrator, this is the only decision that actually matters: does it go inside, or does it stay outside? Every guide in this category builds a comparison table and then refuses to answer. This one gives you a verdict, the numbers behind it, and the fit problem with dual toys that nobody warns you about before you spend the money.
The short answer
Buy external first. In a survey of over a thousand women, only about 18% said penetration alone was enough for them to orgasm, while roughly three quarters said external clitoral stimulation was either necessary or made a significant difference. External is the higher-probability purchase for most people. Internal is not the advanced version, it is the differently targeted one, and it makes more sense as a second purchase once you know what you like.

What the two actually do
The distinction is not really inside versus outside. It is which nerve carries the sensation.
External toys stimulate the clitoris and surrounding tissue, travelling the pudendal nerve. Sensation is sharper, arrives faster, and is easier to control precisely because you can see what you are doing.
Internal toys press on the vaginal walls, travelling the pelvic nerve. Sensation is deeper, slower to build, and more pressure-led than friction-led. Worth knowing: the internal parts of the clitoris wrap around the vaginal canal, so an internal toy is also reaching clitoral tissue from the other side. Our clitoris anatomy guide has the measurements.
So this is not a beginner-versus-advanced ladder. Both are legitimate routes to the same response, and most people end up preferring one strongly.
The spec comparison, with real numbers
No competitor in this keyword publishes a numeric comparison. Their tables have rows called "Size" and "Noise Level" filled in with adjectives. Here are actual figures from our own catalogue.
| External | Internal / dual | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product | Eve | Noah | Beads | Arc |
| Price | ₹899 | ₹999 | ₹1,999 | ₹2,299 |
| Size | 50 x 37 x 83 mm | 40 x 40 x 80 mm | 174 mm total | 172 x 96 mm overall |
| Insertable | None | None | About 6 in | Internal end 104 mm |
| Diameter | Not applicable | Not applicable | 32 mm / 27 mm | 32 x 35 mm |
| Weight | 101 g | 86 g | 110 g | 138 g |
| Motors | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2, independent |
| Modes | 10 | 10 | 9 | 9 |
| Battery | 300 mAh | 300 mAh | 300 mAh | 300 mAh |
| Runtime | 100 to 120 min | About 150 min | About 120 min | About 90 min |
| Water rating | IPX6 | IPX6 | IPX6 | IPX6 |
| Lube needed | Optional | Optional | Yes | Yes |
| One-handed | Easy | Easy | Manageable | Harder |
Read the runtime row against the motor row. All four carry the same 300 mAh cell, and runtime falls as the motor count and load rise: Noah gets about 150 minutes from one small motor, Arc about 90 from two. That is the trade-off for dual stimulation, stated as a number rather than a feeling.

The verdict, and the evidence behind it
Competitor guides end with "it depends on what you enjoy", which is true and useless to someone who has not bought one yet. Here is the actual answer.
Buy external first. The reasoning is a probability argument, not a taste one. In a large survey of American women published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, only about 18% reported that vaginal penetration alone was sufficient for orgasm. Roughly a third said clitoral stimulation was necessary during intercourse, and a further third said it made things substantially better. Around three quarters of respondents, in other words, get something meaningful from external stimulation.
An external toy is also cheaper, lighter, easier to clean, quieter, needs no lubricant, and works one-handed. If it turns out not to be your preference, you have spent ₹899 finding out.
Buy internal instead if penetration is already something you actively enjoy and want more control over, or if you have used external stimulation for a while and want something different. That is a real preference held by plenty of people; it is just the minority case for a first purchase.
The dual-toy fit problem nobody mentions
The obvious move looks like buying a dual toy and getting both at once. Sometimes that works well. Here is the part the listings do not tell you.
A dual toy has a fixed distance between the insertable shaft and the external arm. Call it the arm gap. That distance is designed around an average body. But the distance between the vaginal opening and the clitoris varies substantially between people, and it is not a dimension anyone publishes or that you can easily measure before buying.
If the gap does not match you, one of three things happens: the arm sits too far away and does nothing, it presses too hard and becomes uncomfortable, or it slides out of position every time either of you moves. You then have an expensive toy being used as a mediocre single-purpose one.
| One dual toy | Two separate toys | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Arc at ₹2,299 | Eve ₹899 + Beads ₹1,999 = ₹2,898 |
| Fit | Depends on the arm gap matching your body | Always fits, since you position each one |
| Control | Arc has two independent motors, so you can set each separately. Cheaper dual toys share one control | Fully independent |
| Charging and cleaning | One device | Two of everything |
| Storage | One item to hide | Two |
| Buying order | All at once | External now, internal later if you want it |
The honest recommendation: treat a dual toy as a second or third purchase, once you know your own geometry and preferences. If you do buy one first, buy one with independently controlled motors, because a shared control means the arm intensity you want dictates the internal intensity you get. Our dual stimulation guide goes into this in more detail.
Seven practical differences at purchase time
- Lubricant. Internal is effectively mandatory, external is optional. That is a recurring cost, not a one-off. Water-based only with silicone toys.
- Cleaning. External needs the contact face washed. Internal needs a full wash before and after, every time, plus real drying time. Ribbed and jointed shapes trap water.
- Drying. This is where internal toys actually die. Moisture trapped in a seam or a charging port is the most common cause of failure, well ahead of motor wear.
- One-handed use. External wins clearly. Internal usually needs positioning first, and dual toys often need a hand to keep the arm in place.
- Noise. A toy pressed against the body and partly inside it is muffled; an external toy against open air is not. Neither is loud, but the external one is the one you would hear through a door.
- Storage. An external toy at 86 to 101 grams looks like a gadget. A 174 mm insertable does not. In a shared home this is a real consideration rather than a squeamish one.
- Learning curve. External gives feedback immediately. Internal takes a few sessions to work out angle and pressure, which is worth knowing so you do not write it off after one try.
If you are buying internal: the diameter ladder
Diameter decides comfort far more than length does, and almost nobody publishes it.
| Widest point | Who it suits |
|---|---|
| 25 mm | First insertable, or if you have found anything internal uncomfortable before |
| 27 to 32 mm | The usual comfortable range for most people. Beads sits here at 27 to 32 mm |
| 35 mm and above | Noticeable stretch. Fine if you already know you like fullness, too much as a first purchase |
On length: the responsive area on the front wall sits only a few centimetres in, so extra insertable length adds very little. A toy you can still grip at full insertion is more useful than a longer one you cannot.
The running costs are not the same
| External | Internal | |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | ₹899 to ₹999 | ₹1,999 to ₹2,299 |
| Lubricant | Optional, occasional | Required, ongoing |
| Cleaning time per use | Under a minute | Several minutes plus drying |
| Most likely failure | Charging port | Moisture in a seam or port |
None of this is an argument against internal toys. It is an argument for knowing that the ₹1,999 on the label is not the whole number, and that the cleaning routine is a real commitment rather than an afterthought. Our cleaning and storage guide has the method, and the IPX guide explains why IPX6 means rinse rather than submerge.
Noise, storage and lube in an Indian home
Three things that change the answer here and appear in no international guide.
Noise in a shared house. If you live with family, run the door test before you commit: switch the toy on at its usual setting, close the door, and stand outside. Most of the worry is about a sound nobody can actually hear. A fan or air conditioner covers the rest.
Storage. A compact external toy passes for a gadget in a drawer. A long insertable does not, and in a house where cupboards get tidied by other people that matters. If discretion is the binding constraint, external wins on that ground alone. Discreet sex toys when living with family covers storage and drying properly.
Lubricant availability. Every chemist in India stocks a water-based personal lubricant and you can ask for it by that name. We do not sell one. Check the label actually says water-based, because the cheapest tubes at the counter are often petroleum-based, which damages both silicone toys and latex condoms.
Which to buy, by situation
| If this is you | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First vibrator, no strong preference yet | Eve, ₹899 | External, broad contact, 101 g, rechargeable silicone. The lowest-risk way to find out what you like |
| Want precision and long sessions | Noah, ₹999 | External and pinpoint, 86 g, about 150 minutes per charge |
| You already enjoy penetration | Beads, ₹1,999 | Internal, about 6 in insertable, 27 to 32 mm diameter |
| You know you want both at once | Arc, ₹2,299 | Two independent motors, so the two intensities are set separately. Check the arm-gap caveat above |
| Living with family, discretion is the priority | Eve or Noah | Small, muffled easily, and they do not look like anything in a drawer |
| Buying with a partner in mind | Start external | Easier to use on someone else, easier to hand over, no lube logistics mid-session |
If budget is the constraint, everything under ₹1,000 compares the cheaper end with full specs.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy an internal or external vibrator first?
External, for most people. Only about 18% of women in a large survey said penetration alone was enough for orgasm, while around three quarters got something meaningful from clitoral stimulation. External is also cheaper, lighter, quieter, easier to clean and needs no lubricant, so it is the lower-risk way to learn your preferences.
What is the difference between an internal and external vibrator?
External stimulates the clitoris and surrounding tissue through the pudendal nerve, giving sharper and faster sensation. Internal presses on the vaginal walls through the pelvic nerve, giving deeper and slower sensation that responds to pressure rather than friction. Internal toys also reach the internal parts of the clitoris from the other side.
Is a rabbit or dual vibrator a good first buy?
Usually not. Dual toys have a fixed distance between the shaft and the external arm, while the distance between the vaginal opening and clitoris varies between people. If it does not match you, the arm floats off, presses too hard, or slides. Better as a second purchase once you know your own geometry.
Do I need lube with an internal vibrator?
Yes, effectively always, and it needs reapplying during use. Water-based only, because silicone lubricant permanently degrades silicone toys. External toys work fine without, though a small amount usually improves the feel. Lube is a recurring cost worth factoring into the internal option.
What diameter should a first internal vibrator be?
Around 25 to 32 mm at the widest point. Diameter decides comfort far more than length does. The responsive area on the front wall sits only a few centimetres in, so extra insertable length adds little; being able to grip the toy at full insertion matters more.
Which is quieter, internal or external?
Internal, generally, because a toy partly inside the body and pressed against tissue is muffled while an external one against open air is not. Neither is loud. If you live with family, run the door test: switch it on, close the door and listen from outside.
Can I use an external vibrator with a partner?
Yes, and it is usually the easier of the two for partnered use. It works one-handed, needs no positioning, and can be handed back and forth without a pause. Our guide on using a vibrator with your partner covers the practicalities.
Is one better for orgasm than the other?
External is the more reliable route for most people, based on how many report needing clitoral stimulation. But plenty of people prefer internal or a combination, and there is no hierarchy of quality between them. They are different routes to the same response, not different grades of experience.
Can I buy one of each instead of a dual toy?
Yes, and it often works out better. Two separate toys always fit, can be positioned independently, and can be bought in sequence rather than all at once. The trade-offs are cost, two devices to charge and clean, and two things to store.
How do I clean each type?
External needs the contact face washed with warm water and mild soap. Internal needs a full wash before and after every use, plus proper drying time, since trapped moisture in a seam or charging port is the most common cause of failure. Neither should be submerged at IPX6.
Which lasts longer on a charge?
Among ours, the single-motor external Noah runs about 150 minutes, Eve 100 to 120, the internal Beads about 120, and the dual-motor Arc about 90, all from the same 300 mAh cell. Runtime falls as motor count and load rise, which is the real cost of dual stimulation.
We make sex toys, not diagnoses. Start with the one that is easiest to learn on.
